POSITION SUMMARY:

 

  • Support communication functions and promote positive public relations between the school district and the community
  • Prepare and provide information to the public about the activities, goals, and policies of the school district
  • Distribute pertinent information about the district and its activities to employees
  • Utilize speech and various media to inform and involve the community in District events, programs, and activities

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

 

  • Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, and public speaking
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Thorough knowledge of media relations and public relations functions
  • Ability to monitor and assist with social media communications
  • Proficient skills in print / digital design, videography, photography, social media
  • Proficient with current trends in social media and website
  • Must be able to research and interpret topical information with limited timelines
  • Ability to work with the local business community
  • Such alternative to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable

 

Experience:

 

  • One to three years of experience in journalism, public relations, communications, or related field experience
  • Public school experience preferred

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Write district and campus communications materials for internal and external publications
  • Assist with creating layout and design of newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, and other district projects
  • Assist campuses with newsletters and websites, provide website training to staff
  • Prepare certificates, plaques, gifts for recognition, ceremonies
  • Help school personnel publicize and promote performances, exhibitions, displays, or special programs sponsored by the schools
  • Assist reporting directors with electronic communications, speeches, district presentations, and correspondence
  • Assist with writing and design of district publications and videos
  • Produce and post content on the district’s social media outlets and monitor feedback/comments
  • Photograph and video assigned campus/district events for publication
  • Manage day-to-day activities for the communications/digital media offices
  • Coordinate the dissemination of information to the public through the district website and update the website
  • Update and maintain communication for digital signage
  • Assist with duties and responsibilities of the communications/digital media offices in the absence of the department heads
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); heavy lifting (45 pounds or over)  
  • Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (body fluids, bacteria, communicable diseases); occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent in-district and occasional out of district travel
  • Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to interact positively and proactively with students, staff, and the community
  • Professional Dress: Dress must be clean, neat, in a manner appropriate for his or her assignment, and in accordance with any additional standards established by his or her supervisor and approved by the Superintendent.  During work hours, visible body piercings (except earrings) will not be allowed.  Visible tattoos will be covered at all times
