District Communications Coordinator and Webmaster
Primary Purpose:
Promote positive public relations between the school district and community. Prepare and provide information to the public about the activities, goals, and policies of the school district. Distribute pertinent information about the district and its activities to employees.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field
Master's degree preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, parents, or the public
Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district
Thorough knowledge of media relations and public relations functions
Ability to use software to develop spreadsheets, perform data analysis, and do word processing
Knowledge of computer hardware and instructional software applications
Knowledge of HTML and website publishing platforms/applications, experience with Blackboard a plus
Proficiency with computers and software, including desktop publishing and video/photo editing and publishing
Knowledge of various social media platforms
Basic graphic design skills
Ability to work as a member of a team and maintain a positive office environment
Ability to analyze and solve problems
Organized, detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to multi-task, often changing assignments on short notice with little or no direction
Experience:
3 years journalism, communications, or webmaster experience preferred
School district experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Public and Community Relations
- Ensure that public information activities contribute to the attainment of district goals and objectives.
- Design, prepare, and edit district publications including newsletters, recruitment brochures, programs for special events, and other publications.
- Serve as district representative on community committees as required. Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs including speaking at civic organization meetings and make presentations.
- Work under minimal supervision to serve as the information liaison between the school district and the community. Coordinate media coverage including preparing press releases and publishing articles and photos in local media and other publications.
- Ensure that public information activities contribute to the attainment of district goals and objectives.
- Take photographs for district publications, presentations, and displays. Record meetings or programs (both video and audio) throughout the district.
- Systematically check the entire LWISD website to insure information is accurate and current and that links are working and appropriate.
- Assist in the development, documentation, and communication of acceptable use of electronic communications policy, regulations, and standards.
- Implement District branding program; work to create a presence on approved social media for the district.
Policies, Reports, and Law
- Develop and publicize reports related to the performance of the district and articulate district goals and objectives.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Budget
- Develop and administer the department budget based on documented needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
Web Administration
- Manage the overall district website including adding or deleting users as necessary and creating and removing pages for campus staff as necessary.
- Manage the district level areas including departments of the website to improve consistency, timely updating of information, and freeing department staff to use their time on other duties.
- Provide support (as much or as little as desired) to campuses in maintaining the campus level areas of campus websites.
- Provide training and support for teachers responsible for web pages.
- Design and maintain district website and intranet using tools such as Java, Javascript, Python, C, C#, C++, Objective-C, Ruby, Perl, PHP, HTML, ASP.NET or other web-based technologies.
- Consult with management to evaluate and implement tools and methods to deploy district information on the Internet and intranet.
- Create and analyze reports on web activity, number of hits, traffic patterns, and similar performance metrics
- Maintain and administer all legal domains owned by the district.
- May train staff in the use of the Internet, intranet, or related technology.
Security
- Ensure data integrity and security through appropriate protection from intruders, viruses and other potentially harmful web-related technologies.
Other
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Collaborates with the Technology Department.
- All other duties as assigned.
