Primary Purpose:

To fulfill the mission of the Communications & Marketing Department to foster strategic relationships to effectively and openly communicate important news, information, achievements, and successes of Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD.  We will work to engage parents, students, school staff, Board members, administrators, and community members through a multi-faceted, two-way communication program.  The Communications team oversees and coordinates all the district’s media, public and community relations, and promotes awareness and understanding of EMS ISD programs, services, mission and goals.  We support school leaders and personnel in communication needs, manage communications in crisis situations, and work to promote the image and identity of the district among internal and external stakeholders.

In this role, the Communications Coordinator will work alongside department staff in promoting news and announcements of the district, with a focus on both district and campus website management as well as writing relevant, timely and engaging content for web and other publications.  The position will lead efforts to ensure the district and campus websites are current with staff lists, calendar items and campus and district information, supporting all departments and campuses with managing their websites, and will act as a liaison for website compliance with all state and federal laws.

Qualifications: 

Education/Certification             

  • The ideal candidate will have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher in communications, marketing, journalism and/or an educational field from an accredited college or university.

 

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of web architecture principles, database design, mobile web functionality, digitization usability testing, online financial transactions, web authoring and graphic design applications, RSS feeds, podcasting and video streaming
  • Understanding and experience in online web applications with embedded graphics, audio, video, applet, and script objects
  • Knowledge of graphic design software and web applications
  • Experience in writing (news, features, script, business) with an emphasis on storytelling
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing, including an exceptional command of grammar, mechanics, proofreading, and editing
  • Knowledge of AP style, FERPA, the Texas Public Information Act, and copyright laws
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and manage multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Can respond calmly and effectively in times of crisis
  • Strong time-management skills with the ability to work successfully with tight deadlines
  • Self-starter and self-motivator with the ability to think independently to solve problems
  • Ability and willingness to work positively and collaboratively within a close team

Experience

No less than 3 years’ experience in communications/public relations or staff writing role in a public education environment.                            

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Communications Department Main Roll

  • Serve as a point-of-contact for district and departmental websites; provide day-to-day process management and oversight of website content creation, organization, and relevance to ensure ease of use in both mobile and desktop platforms, compliance with standards of quality, and consistent branding
  • Monitor district and campus websites for compliance with all state and federal guidelines and laws, with specific attention to digital content accessibility guidelines, and address errors as needed
  • Maintain district and campus calendars to provide an accurate source of information for visitors
  • Serve as staff writer to produce content for web, district magazine, district newsletters, social media, and other district publications or projects
  • Assist with special project writings, publications and presentations assigned including brochures, community reports, leadership presentations, and marketing materials
  • Provide support for graphic design, social media, photography, and videos when needed for district publicity
  • Assist with special events (internal and external)
  • Coordinate the process for selecting campus and district employees of the year and recognizing employees with milestone years of service
  • Respond quickly and appropriately in crisis situations; become available to assist the department director and executive director with various messaging for letters, press releases, media statements, voice/email/text call outs, talking points, and handling media calls when necessary
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Provide support, training, and resources to assist campuses and departments with website needs including design/navigation/access issues, web-based templates/forms, and compliance with web standards and policies

Internal Staff Relations

  • Develop and maintain a systemic process to update content on the campus websites, ensuring accuracy and timelines
  • Create and apply district standards/guidelines for teachers, administrators, and other staff members to use when creating web pages so that any online information representing the district is aligned with overall district goals of accessibility and mobile functionality
  • Monitor metrics and analyze website traffic statistics for decision-making and periodic reporting and review of content effectiveness
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with district, campus, and department leaders; teachers and support personnel; and administrative employees
  • Actively participate/assist in the implementation and promotion of the district’s strategic plan; provide guidance, direction and support for administrators, campus leaders and teachers in communicating with their specific audiences

External/Community Relations:

  • Coordinate management of the district website under the direction of the Director of Multimedia, Marketing and Engagement, ensuring content is timely and relevant, design/appearance exemplifies the brand of EMS ISD and supports marketing goals, and the user interface is logical and easily navigable
  • Seek out/cover relevant and timely stories to engage audiences and promote the district in all mediums of dissemination
  • Seek, accept, and respond appropriately to feedback from others to improve performance of assigned duties
  • Attend staff, Board and other professional meetings as required
  • Perform duties in a professional and ethical manner

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manage and evaluate contracted service providers as needed for website maintenance (accessibility compliance) and content generation (writing, graphic design, special purpose) for publicity purposes.
